Festival opens with emotional farewell to the iconic filmmaker, featuring a short film edited by longtime collaborator Duwayne Dunham.
“His contribution to beauty, dreams, and art will never be forgotten,” said artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro. “And tonight, we celebrate him with this tiny, wonderful masterpiece.”
On the opening night of its 78th edition, the Locarno Film Festival paid a moving and unexpected tribute to legendary director David Lynch with the screening of a short film titled An Unfinished Room… Shown under the stars in Locarno’s famed Piazza Grande, the film served as both a celebration and a farewell to one of cinema’s most enigmatic voices.
The short was crafted by Lynch’s longtime editor and collaborator Duwayne Dunham, whose credits include Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Twin Peaks, and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Dunham, once a mentee of Lynch’s, brought together unseen footage and artistic fragments into a meditative, dreamlike homage that captured the essence of Lynch’s surreal vision.
Lynch, who was not in attendance, was honored in absentia with what Nazzaro called “a gift to the audience and a final bow to a master of modern myth.”
As the screen faded to black, the moment lingered — a fitting echo of Lynch’s signature style: haunting, beautiful, and unforgettable.
