Thousands demand refunds after technical failures and delays mar Ye’s much-hyped return to the stage in China.
Kanye “Ye” West’s highly anticipated return to live performance hit a sour note Friday night in Shanghai, as the rapper and producer struggled through a rain-soaked, chaotic concert marred by technical failures and delays.
Held at the 56,000-capacity Shanghai Stadium, the July 12 show quickly descended into frustration for fans. Ye appeared onstage more than 40 minutes late, prompting chants for refunds from the soaked and impatient crowd. Persistent rain and ongoing sound issues only worsened the experience, overshadowing what was meant to be a triumphant moment for the artist.
The performance was part of a promotional push for Ye’s upcoming album Bully, and followed his widely viewed and profitable listening party in Haikou last year. Despite ongoing controversies surrounding Ye — including backlash over racist remarks and erratic behavior on social media — tickets for the Shanghai show reportedly sold out within minutes, reflecting his enduring popularity among Chinese fans.
However, the mishandled event has cast a shadow over that momentum. Social media reactions from attendees were overwhelmingly negative, with many sharing videos of technical glitches, poor stage visibility, and audibly booing crowds.
While Ye remains a polarizing figure globally, the botched concert serves as a reminder that even a devoted fanbase has its limits — especially when expectations are met with disarray.
