Michael Mann’s long-anticipated follow-up to his iconic 1995 crime thriller Heat is officially moving forward—with a new home and powerhouse producers behind it. Titled Heat 2, the ambitious sequel is now being developed under the banner of United Artists, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, after parting ways with Warner Bros.
The shift marks a major step for the project, which had been in limbo after Warner Bros. reportedly failed to reach a budget agreement with Mann earlier this year. In August, the studio allowed the film to be shopped to other potential backers. Now, with United Artists stepping in, the project is gaining serious momentum once again.
Joining the production team are two of Hollywood’s most influential figures: Jerry Bruckheimer and Scott Stuber. Bruckheimer, known for producing blockbuster franchises like Top Gun and Pirates of the Caribbean, brings his action pedigree to the table. Stuber, formerly the head of global films at Netflix and now affiliated with United Artists, adds further creative firepower. Both will produce the film alongside Mann and Nick Nesbitt, Stuber’s producing partner.
Heat 2 is envisioned as both a sequel and prequel, continuing and expanding the storylines of the original film’s central characters. The 1995 classic, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, is widely considered a genre-defining masterpiece that blended intense action with psychological depth. Based on Mann’s 2022 novel of the same name (co-written with Meg Gardiner), the new film will explore events before and after the original story, diving deeper into the criminal underworld and the lives of its protagonists.
While official casting has yet to be confirmed, Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly circling a lead role, fueling anticipation for a high-caliber ensemble.
