Puerto Rican music sensation Bad Bunny expressed support for Vice President Kamala Harris on Sunday by sharing a video of her pledges to improve Puerto Rico’s future. This came shortly after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a disparaging joke about Puerto Rico during a Donald Trump rally, sparking widespread condemnation.
In the video shared with his 45 million Instagram followers, Bad Bunny—whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio—reposted Harris’ remarks on Trump’s past neglect of Puerto Rico following devastating hurricanes, echoing her criticism of the former president’s response. “He abandoned the island, tried to block aid… and offered nothing more than paper towels and insults,” Harris said, referencing Trump’s criticized gesture of tossing paper towels to struggling residents in the wake of Hurricane Maria in 2017.
The offensive comment from Hinchcliffe, in which he referred to Puerto Rico as “a floating island of garbage,” was met with immediate backlash. Bad Bunny’s repost of Harris’ message came amid a battle between the Harris and Trump campaigns to earn support from Latino voters, particularly the Puerto Rican community in Pennsylvania. With approximately 500,000 Puerto Ricans in the state, their support could be pivotal in the upcoming election.
Harris, who is ramping up her engagement with Latino communities, also visited a Puerto Rican restaurant in North Philadelphia earlier that day, discussing plans for an “opportunity economy task force for Puerto Rico” aimed at bolstering economic opportunities and enhancing infrastructure on the island.
While Bad Bunny has not officially endorsed Harris, his reposting of her video highlights his focus on Puerto Rican issues and aligns him with the vice president’s vision for the island.
