Jennifer Lopez recently opened up about one of the biggest career decisions she regrets — turning down a major film role that ultimately earned another actress an Academy Award nomination. During an in-depth interview on The Howard Stern Show, the multi-hyphenate star revealed she passed on the lead in Unfaithful, the 2002 erotic thriller directed by Adrian Lyne.
“Adrian Lyne offered me Unfaithful,” Lopez said, referencing the sultry drama that starred Diane Lane and Richard Gere as a married couple torn apart by infidelity. “I didn’t even know what the hell was going on in my mind at the time,” she added. “It haunts me.”
The film centers on a seemingly stable suburban marriage that unravels after the wife embarks on a passionate affair with a younger man, played by Olivier Martinez. Lane’s emotionally raw and complex performance earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the 2003 Academy Awards — a recognition Lopez can’t help but wonder might have been hers had she accepted the part.
Lopez didn’t explain in detail why she declined the offer, but hinted it was a combination of timing and uncertainty. “Sometimes it’s timing, sometimes it’s fear,” she reflected. “You just don’t know. You second-guess things. And then, years later, you’re like, ‘What was I thinking?’”
At the time, Lopez was already a rising star, known for both her music career and acting roles in films like Out of Sight and The Wedding Planner. But Unfaithful represented a darker, more emotionally intense role — one that could have shifted her trajectory in the dramatic film space.
Despite her regret, Lopez remains focused on the future. She recently premiered Kiss of the Spider Woman at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where she stars alongside Diego Luna in a bold reimagining of the classic story. The film is already generating early awards buzz, suggesting that her moment in the Oscar spotlight may still be ahead.
In the end, Lopez’s candid admission offers a rare glimpse into the high-stakes decisions behind Hollywood careers — and a reminder that even the most successful stars have moments of doubt and missed opportunities. “You learn,” she said. “And then you move forward.”
