The actor, who originally played Scott Summers/Cyclops in the original X-Men trilogy, is reprising his role in the upcoming MCU blockbuster Avengers: Doomsday. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Marsden opened up about how meaningful the return is, both personally and professionally.
“I’m getting a little long in the tooth to put on the superhero costume,” Marsden joked. “But I was excited — you’re part of something gigantic.” He added that for years, fans have been asking him the same question: “When are you coming back?”
Marsden played the mutant team leader in X-Men (2000), X2: X-Men United (2003), and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), though his character was killed off in the latter film. Despite that, fan enthusiasm for his return has never faded — and now, with Avengers: Doomsday, Marsden says the timing finally felt right.
“I’m dead. Well, maybe not,” he teased, nodding to Marvel’s famously flexible timeline. “If they waited a few more years, I might’ve had a tougher time getting into the costume. But it’s been a blast. It really has.”
Calling the experience a “nice little homecoming,” Marsden reflected on how much the character meant to him. “It was the first real event movie I was a part of, and Cyclops is such a beloved character from the comics. Getting to step back into that role was something really special.”
Marsden isn’t the only X-Men alum making a comeback. Avengers: Doomsday will also feature Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique — all of whom originated their roles in the early 2000s X-Men films. Their return signals a major crossover event that merges legacy characters with the modern MCU timeline.
Avengers: Doomsday is already generating massive buzz and is slated to hit theaters in 2026. While plot details remain under wraps, the film is expected to be one of the most ambitious Marvel projects to date, bringing together characters from across multiverses — and eras.
Marsden’s return as Cyclops is more than just fan service; it’s a tribute to the character’s lasting legacy and a nod to the fans who kept asking for more
