Richard Stermer, one of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ most enduring and respected figures, is retiring after 31 years of dedicated service, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.
For Los Angeles–based Academy members, Stermer’s departure marks the end of an era. Since 1994, he has been a constant presence at the organization’s 1,000-seat Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Beginning as deputy theater manager, he rose through the ranks to become theater manager, and most recently, in January, was promoted to senior theater manager.
Over the decades, Stermer has overseen a wide array of key events at the Goldwyn Theater — from weekend member screenings and high-profile premieres hosted by studios, to the pre-dawn announcements of Oscar nominations that draw global attention.
His quiet leadership, professionalism, and encyclopedic knowledge of Academy operations have made him a behind-the-scenes mainstay and an irreplaceable figure in the life of the theater and its legacy
