Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke have never played by Hollywood’s rules—and they’re not about to start now. The legendary filmmaker and his wife of 32 years, who is also his longtime editor and now full-fledged writing partner, are taking bold creative swings in their latest queer crime comedy, Honey Don’t!.
The film, a follow-up to Ethan’s solo debut Drive-Away Dolls, dives headfirst into lesbian B-movie territory, blending pulpy noir tropes with irreverent humor and Coen-esque absurdity. But don’t expect a sanitized version for today’s fragile cultural climate.
“We’re not interested in being safe,” says Cooke. “The whole point is to poke at expectations—especially in a time when everyone’s terrified of offending anyone.”
The pair don’t shy away from politics either. When asked about navigating the Trump-era sensitivities, Ethan shrugs: “It’s not that we’re aiming to offend, but if it happens, we’re okay with that. We’re just telling stories that feel real to us.”
Their collaboration has added a fresh dimension to Ethan’s work post-Coen brothers. Cooke, who identifies as lesbian, brings a perspective rarely seen in traditional Hollywood narratives, one that shines in the offbeat characters and themes of Honey Don’t!.
Still, the couple keeps their humor sharp—and their gripes pithy. “You know what’s wrong with movies today?” Ethan muses. “No one uses punctuation in titles anymore. That’s the real tragedyAs for whether he’ll reteam with Joel? “We’ll see,” Ethan says with a smirk. “But for now, Tricia’s the partner I want in this creative chaos.”
